Jumaadi
Jumaadi is an Indonesian born artist who came to Sydney in 2000 to study at the National Art School where he competed a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Master of Fine Art. Jumaadi has lived and worked in Sydney since then and has participated in many exhibitions in Australia and overseas.
Due to his close ties with both Indonesia and Australia, Jumaadi’s imagery traverses the histories and narratives that weave between the neighboring countries. His artwork contains a rare insight into this cross-cultural dialogue and acts as a reflection on his life between these two ‘worlds’.
Using a unique approach to art, Jumaadi renders his own poetry with his dream-like hand tooled buffalo hide works, paintings and major large-scale installation works. Jumaadi brings epic myths and demons with him into his contemporary practice, with elements of animism and spirituality also adding to the poetics of his artworks.
Jumaadi invites his audience to revisit the past through a new lens of creative imagery that re-imagines stories through a range of visually arresting and poetic artworks that speak to human resilience, the power of beauty and the enduring nature of love: of people, of culture and country.
“For Indonesian-born, Sydney-based artist Jumaadi, active audience participation forms a key part of his artistic practice, whether that be through engaging with his entertaining shadow puppet performances...”
